This is the type of filter that most people use in their homes. The main reason this filter is so popular is because of its cost and it’s size. It is also relatively easy to use. The filter itself uses granules that are activated carbon (based around charcoal) so that a contaminant is blocked. The porous charcoal type material attracts and traps chemical through absorption. Unwanted liquids or gases are for trapped by other liquids and solids.

 

How Do Water Filters Work?

Ok let’s take a look at each of these types of water filter and exactly how they carry out their work.

Reverse Osmosis Filter

This filter usually consists of a minimum of 3 stages, quite often five stages and sometimes more.

The first membrane removes physical contaminants such as dirt, metal rust and debris that might damage the second filter.

The second filter is normally the carbon one. This filter is focused on chemical elements such as fluoride and chlorine.

Membrane number 3 is also carbon, it is created much more densely so that it prevents minute particles making it through.

These three filters make sure that your drinking water is almost free from contaminants.

As hardened water passes through the filter ions are attracted to calcium and magnesium in the water, and exchange of sodium is experienced. A major test of your water quality is it’s ph level. As a guide for pH levels  pH of 0 is completely acidic, while a pH of 14 is totally alkaline. pH of 7 is neutral.

Starting your test

Once you have clearly read through all the instructions provided then it’s time to actually test your water. Follow the instructions closely but generally they all follow the same method which is – submerge each test strip into the water, you should keep it in the water for the correct amount of time that the instructions stipulate.

When your time is up, take the strip out of the water and remove any excess by shaking.

You should now wait the appropriate amount of time that the instructions tell you before you compare the colour of the strip to the chart provided.

Interpreting the results

When we compare the test strip that we’ve just submerged in the water to the provided colour chart then we can see exactly how your water is contaminated – if it is at all.

Visible test

In order to carry out a visible test of water you should use an empty glass and fill it then hold it up to a window or daylight. You should look for things floating in the water or if the water is cloudy.

Some of the most common particles that can be found are of a brown or Orangery colour which usually signifies deterioration in pipes or fixtures through rust.

If you have black particles floating then this can come from your internal pipes or hoses, usually this is caused by chlorine Decay.

If the water appears cloudy then this can indicate that your water is very hard. The cloudiness is caused by large amounts of either calcium or magnesium carbonate.

Smell
